Important documents must be preserved for a very long time. Decades for many valuable documents. Standard papers and ink slowly degrade over time. Standard papers are made with high levels of acid that is the root cause. Thankfully, Archival paper is made with slight alkaline or with neutral pH to prevent yellowing and brittleness as the paper ages.
Newspapers lie at the complete opposite end of paper longevity. They are meant to be read day one and recycled on day two, therefore the cheapest inks and papers are used. Signs of yellowing occurs within a couple of weeks.
The process of making Archival paper is far more complex than newsprint. It also makes it more expensive. The paper is treated to remove the lignin (which cause the yellowing). Then it is treated with soda ash or calcium carbonate to make it pH neutral. Archival paper is much more friendly to ink holding the true color for a very long time. Inks can also be classified as Archival. Inks that are fade resistant for up to 75 years are considered Archival.
When you combine Archival ink and paper, the result is a product that will typically outlast a person’s lifespan. Fortunately, we only use archival inks and papers and thus, your great grandchildren will be able to enjoy your fantastic framed photos as much as you will.
